Belgium determines that loot boxes are illegal

The 1st World War against the “Loot Boxes” had its first conquest!

Now it is a matter of time for more companies (Hello IMC) to have their Loot system investigated and verified … Since some companies have been proven that the percentage applied in the “boxes” could vary according investment made by the player, what will be 1% could decrease dramatically just for the player to buy more boxes.

Eai IMC, will IP Block roll to Belgium?

What do you think?

Mostly simple solution for them.

You really think one or two would make that much difference?

I wouldn’t mind if the CS boxes where only related to costume, in fact, the whole TP shop where only on cosmetics, but that won’t be happening in any mmo as far as I can tell.

It’s just my opinion, but all MMOs from Asia region get destroyed mainly by this kind of business they decide to run, then again, there are still “smart” people who like it hence giving incentive to the company keeping it up.

Now on another note, I’m wondering if they will ever want to extend this to loot system too lol, that would be really funny to see.

So, I see the formula used in ktos a legal balance of loot box, even for the reason of the legislation of there oblige … here as it does not have them do as they want and sincerely, I hope that more countries follow this example, I know that the company needs to make a profit, but it does not have to go so far as to steal its customers, or take advantage of manipulation to get the money out.

I could be wrong, but Asians do seem to love gambling, if it work well for them in their region, my basis for this claiming? The simple fact that the game companies still use this kind of thing in their games over there.

Then again, some here on our region do like the same thing, otherwise IMC would probably change the loot boxes for something more profitable.

Then again, it’s just my guesses. In the mean time we have to deal with it.

Weren’t it only lootboxes where the Items can be sold for money again either directly (e.g. steam market) or on any third party site? I mean technically you can’t directly resell Stuff here for money and I’m not sure if “third party” includes Sites that break the Terms of Services (and would lead to account termination).

EDIT: By the definition above EA games like battlefront aren’t affected since the “lootbox” Items are tied to the account - ironical since EA caused the uproar.

I think I read some years ago that Korea also have laws about that. Maybe there are some flaws to avoid those laws

Logged in to comment about regulations issue as well. Some games like Warp portal’s IRO are quitting the EU market and blocking EU IPs because they don’t want to spend money to deal with GDPR. IMC can choose to block Belgium, or ignore them until someone files a complaint. i would say GDPR is far more serious than Belgium’s Loot Box ban because companies will be dealing with the whole European continent.

That is the thing, specially in ToS case, isn’t the population in Fedimian pretty low? If so, for IMC would be less painful to just close the server in EU than fight back a continental law.

I know it’s a good thing in some parts, but not so much in others, if the law was world wide then yes, they would had to change their ways.

But some continents, specially 3rd World ones like here (SA) wouldn’t do that, because the corruption here is engraved into the roots of the government, and unfortunately, the people here don’t wake up for it and just go with the flow.

Off-topic:

Then again, with the way things are going, I wouldn’t doubt they closing up the services in west (all servers) 6months to a year time. But if they wake up, they can turn that over, but enough of off-topic

I think Korea’s laws force them to show the exact looting chances for every items. And IMC does show them on kTOS but… not on iTOS since they’re not restricted.
I don’t know exactly what this belgian law is about, but maybe IMC can find a rather easy/cheap way to work around it.
If not, I hope more countries join the fight against stupid lootboxes.

It’s indeed the lowest populated one afaik, but that doesn’t mean it’s the less profitable one.

I guess IMC won’t face problems since there is already a limiting factor, which is the spending limit of 300 TP per month&account. 300 TP is about 23 Euros in total ( a little less if we consider you get a bonus amount of TP), which limits the greatest issue politicians have with “loot boxes”: the lottery/gambling addiction danger which forces you to spend x Euros every month to get the emotional kick via gambling.

23 Euros is some pocket change for everyone who is not jobless in the EU, so I doubt there will be an issue.
IMC could even argue that their system with free TP is actually encouraging not to gamble as you can buy one “loot box” every 20 hours for half of the initial price [i.e. Leticias cube consuming your 5 Free TP and 5 bought TP] and only having two weeks sales period every month.

If they face problems, it’s more likely that they will stop lifting the TP spending limits on request for Fedimian altogether [so that players can only spend 300 TP a month] instead of shutting down a profitable game server.
