I have developed some quick, point form notes which is the basis of the video review for my YouTube channel. NOTE: I have no Ragnarok experience.
I have over 200 hours logged since March 30th, and a level 170 Sorceror and a level 60 Hoplite.
THE GOOD
- The graphics and artwork are absolutely gorgeous and inspired.
- The XP system uses XP cards that can be used later and is very creative. This adds an element of strategy to leveling.
- Using a PS4 controller via bluetooth for my PC was strange at first but now I am totally in love with it. I have two PS4 controllers and no PS4 in my home. DS4 Windows made it completely plug-in play and I didn’t have to configure anything - it just works.
- The collections system buffs your total account and implements a brilliant exploration aspect to the game that cannot be overstressed how fun and addictive it is.
- Two seperate levels of character and class is brilliant. I repeat, brilliant. The 80 total classes give unlimited replay-ability and variety.
- I am semi-old and the combat system reminds me of Zelda: A Link from the Past from SNES and other console fighters such as Double Dragon or River City Ransom. Because I have millions of hours of experience with those games I love the combat. It doesn’t seem grindy to me because I enjoy the fights.
THE BAD
- Connected to the above point, it seems like there is casting latency when doing moves and this delay can get me killed vs bosses. It seems like part of the game, but I would appreciate a more responsive system like street fighter. Why does it take 2 seconds to cast a two-frame animation fireball? I’m hoping its server lag and not a core programmed fault.
- This game seems a bit pay-to-win at the moment. Not only does the $10/month premium get you 30% more flat XP but the +3 to movement speed and +4 to auction house trades seems a bit busted. Good luck getting to level 240+ without spending some cash (aim for 2017).
- The stash system is disappointing. Not only is it difficult to trade items between alts, you are unable to organize your stash and it costs 20 silver per transaction. Very odd, and somewhat unacceptable.
- Gold selling bots are mildly annoying but not a major issue.
- Some say that this is a boring grind-fest, and it will get that criticism but I do not see it as a grind any more than getting prestige in CoD or ranks in CS:GO. If you enjoy what you are doing it isn’t quite a grind IMHO.
- I’m not accustomed to anime, and was confused by the sexualization of childish characters. Maybe I don’t understand the genre but it seems inappropriate (I am not repressed or prude, just not used to anime and was kinda shocked.). I was expecting Sailor Moon and kinda got something else. The heroes and townsfolk seem both 12 and 21.
- I’d like a bald hairstyle for male characters ASAP.
- I realize I’m in the minority here but I muted the music. Electro-cheeze casio beats didn’t quite do it for me. I think a full score would be better in the long term. Such as the Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Orchestra!
- The aura/buff sound effects (Enchant Fire/Reflect Shield) for the wizard become very tiresome and annoying, there needs to be an option to lower the volume of that or remove completely. It’s almost like an alarm clock. Ugh.
