actually no, you must buy at least one game at Steam Before you can start adding friends (you’re level 0 until you’ve done that)
however, you can still accept friend requests as a level 0
Unfortunately for new steam user, they will complain. For the average steam user, it’s hardly anything since they all have spend hundreds purchasing steam games. The $5.00 USD restriction is due to all the constant fake account used to plish people account, so if you want to complain, complain to the hackers.
its true you need to spend atleast 5$ (at the market or buy a game)
You can go on humblebundle.com, grab a 1$ bundle in one of the bundles, and add the games you got on steam to increase your level, at least its not 5$ lol.
What wrong with $5? Are you this poor? They’re doing this to benefit us. It reduces the amount of scammers/bots targeting the steam market. So yeah.
Just so you know $5 on Brazil cost 4x more in our currency, i dont know which country he is but still.
Yes, i did add someone today with level 0 on steam.
First of all, the man has a computer talking and posting his stuff online.
You’re telling me that he can’t afford a really really really small fraction of a cost of a computer + internet and only buying it once? What is wrong with you?
If he can’t afford $5 worth of stuff, why is he here in the first place and not buying food.
Implementing the USD5 restriction benefited you all as it reduces the amount of scammers and bots, that is wonderful news.
However, are there no other alternatives to reduce the amount of scammers and bots? Despite not being a programmer myself, I am pretty sure there are other available methods and alternatives to reduce/prevent scammers and bots.
Yes, there are other ways. But this is the BEST way to limit bots/scammers. This rule applied to WoW if you really wanted to get into it.
I am leaning towards disagreement that this is the best method. I believe that there are other ways to restrict mass accounts of bots and scammers such as:
While the above method is more costly for steam (such as engaging mobile companies), it is still a viable method given the profit margin of Steam.
I do not understand what you meant by the rule applying to WoW, as I do not play WoW. Perhaps you could explain further on that part.
.
Ok, so now your telling me the Korean way is the best option here. Do you really want to post your personal information online for some game? Phone number, sure. My own identity is a no no.
For the phone option, now your telling me that paying my phone bill is cheaper than $5, your out of your mind bud.
Long story short, every company has a privacy policy. Depending on the policy, if your information is being released without your expressed consent, you can sue them.
Just to add that as steam has a minimum age requirement of 13, the identity information provided can simply just be used by Steam for verification of age. As now, even an 11 years old could register for an account by inputting false information. Using identification card as a requisite goes hand in hand with their own minimum age regulations.
What are you talking about? I’m saying steam will have to incur higher expenses on their own end to engage mobile companies for automated SMS verification arrangements. Who’s saying anything about you paying the phone bills?
Edit:
The list of features not available to limited accounts as follows:
Sending friend invites
Opening group chat
Voting on Greenlight, Steam Reviews and Workshop items
Participating in the Steam Market
Posting frequently in the Steam Discussions
Gaining Steam Profile Levels (Locked to level 0) and Trading Cards
Submitting content on the Steam Workshop
Posting in an item’s Steam Workshop Discussions
Accessing the Steam Web API
Using browser and mobile chat
Adding public artwork and screenshots
– I can agree with everything on the list but not adding screenshots, opening group chats and sending friend invitations.
I neither have the intention nor a wish to engage in a pointless debate of simply “paying just USD5” or “most viable method to deter bots/scammers” when my initial rant was simply on the limitations itself.
You have your perception on things, while I have mine. You may disagree with me, I may disagree with you. Let’s just agree to disagree and move on from here.
Valve doesn’t care; they are so secretive and this method benefits them. I’d think of it as cover charge, much like how you have to pay at many bars if you’re under 21 in the states – because they know you aren’t going to buy drinks, but they want to keep rift raft out.
Though if you’d like suggestions on what to buy for $5 or more, I am sure everyone here has a game they can recommend. Do you have a favorite genre or style of art or play type?
Thank you on your offer to suggest! I do not have a specific favorite genre. If I really do have to name one, I guess it would be historical. Style of art, oriental. Play type I’m pretty much okay with anything ranging from FPS to TCG and to MMOs.
I play a lot of different games, so it can be hard for me to pick my favorites – this is my Steam library – and I own 55 games, even if I have not played most of them yet so I can’t speak to my experience with them all but if you see one that looks interesting I can give my opinion. Steam is really good in that sense that if you wait, a lot of games go on sale at huge markdowns or will give out coupons that go to your Steam inventory.
Usually my advice is to add anything of interest to your wish list, because then you can get emails from Steam when those games go on sale. Another way to get games for cheap is to browse the “under 10$” section (there is one that is also “under 5$”), which might be quicker than waiting for sales on particular games since those games are currently on sale (or just always under the set amount). Also, some games have demos and Steam now also lets you refund a game if you’ve played it for less than an hour (I think).
Games available on Steam that I really enjoy include:
Majesty Gold HD – which is an older game, but I still love it today. It has great character which has helped it age even if it doesn’t have the most revolutionary graphics (back then it kinda did, but today the opening cutscene makes me realize how far we’ve come), really made by the amazing choice of voice actors. It calls itself “The Medieval Fantasy Sim”, because even if it is part strategy you don’t have direct control over your subjects and have to influence them by taking advantage of different class synergy and rewards (so some heroes are motivated by bounties while other are motivated by their religion or honor or the thrill of the hunt, for example).
I like Risk of Rain (rogue-lite bullet hell pretty much), Don’t Starve (quirky survival game; they are working on multiplayer which you can beta if you’ve bought the game), Braid (indie puzzle game with a time mechanic, which they use not only in the gameplay but the plot), which are all wildly different genres and art types but they’re pretty good. I was going to write some more beefy descriptions but I have to get ready for work; when in doubt, check out gameplay on Youtube. TotalBiscuit also reviews a lot of games, so he can be a good Youtuber to check out.
I love don’t starve and wilson’s magnificient beard #nohomo. +1 to don’t starve.
And as for OP
$5(around 200+ on my currency) is not really that big if you ask me. It’s like hitting two birds. 1st you get the game you want, 2nd it gives extra security for the community.
So yay! Happy gaming, happy life! No war, just peace! Haha
As someone has mentions, purchase humble bundle sales full of steam games for as low as $1 (I think it was for steam key.) It will give you games worth more than $20 on steam easily, giving you access to all of steam features. The current date of this post gives you capcom games on steam.
Normally I would like to keep my profile public, but due to the constant plishing targeting my 175 games library, I had to make it private.
