About special characters and other symbol letters

If you do not know about special characters :

Special Character: A character that is not a letter, number, symbol, or punctuation mark. Control characters, for example, are special characters, as are special formatting characters such as paragraph marks.

Well, what do you think about those symbol and special characters in nicknames, guilds or parties? I really think it is visual polution and also… well, you might know what happens whenever you try to whisper that friend of yours that his nickname is something like [-xXx***D@rk***xXx-] or :heart:e$p&rM@g!cian or whatever is.

Seriously, why you try to write your nickname like this? :v

Special characters are useful when someone else has the name you want, you can use a special character and still make your name pretty close to the one you want. In ToS I don’t think they will allow special characters (just guessing) because you can have any first name you want even if someone already has the exact same first name. With only one team name per account, the name clutter in ToS will be much lower than some MMO.

I agree, the names that are lots of special characters do look bad.

Special characters are fine when chatting. In names, not so much…

Special characters in names are useful in situations where you want all your “alts” to have a name similar enough that people immediately know it’s you.

Taking RO as an example (for the billionth time), if I had numerous characters that I switch between on the fly (for PvP or what-have-you), I’d be able to have something like, say:

Akizora - Assassin Cross

Akizora~ - Lord Knight

Akizora! - Paladin

Akizora. - Sniper

etc.

This is an especially useful convention for people like myself that aren’t very creative/original/good at coming up with names.

It saves me the trouble of spending 45 minutes at the character creation screen trying to come up with a name for my nth alt, n any integer > 1.

With ToS you will not have this problem with an unique account name, if you name it Akizora, all your characters will be named Akizora, after if you want, you will be able to hide or not the first name (ex: Fletcher Akizora or Necromancer Akizora) [if I’m not wrong]

You don’t even need special characters to make 8 (out of a possible 16) Ninjas named Billy Idol to storm PVP, if the font uses the same uppercase i and lowercase L.

In all seriousness, though. I wouldn’t say they won’t allow it now. Since the game is going to be coded to include a bunch of different languages. So…even if they don’t include Asian character sets, they’d still have to allow quite a few special characters for European languages, right?

They could use the same system as Terraria.
There you can create many characters using one nickname.

I’ve heard they’re going to do some kind of “account name” system so that all your characters have the same name, like Makiyuko said:

Not totally sure, though. I’m not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to information about this game.
