About bans through usage of abusive language

As well all know, we use abusive language. Sometimes to relieve pent up stress, sometimes more… aggressivly. People can be get hurt by that, so goverments made a part of their law to restrict abusive language usage.

As a result, some games and forums are very strict, even aggressivly banning any users of any abusive language. As an example, i just read an forum post - in another forum - about someone who was banned because he was an a guild which had an abusive meaning in it. Personally, that goes a little to far. Dissolving the guild, yes. But banning everyone in it? It goes further. These forums have filters, but probably not for other languages. Nothing stops me from using abusive language from germany, for example.

But that’s not my main concern. As i live in germany, i can’t know every abusive word in other languages. I may, completly accidently, incoparate abusive language in the names of my characters. And i don’t mean english neccesarly. You probably see where im getting at. So, i wanted to know you guys opinion on that matter and also wanted to have an list of abusive words, atleast in english, if someone would provide with a link. (Since obviously we can’t post them here.)

Are you talking about just usage of abusive language or harassment too?
I think the game chat already has a profanity filter active.
About banning people on forums or in-game, i think it should be the last resort really.

But if there is a person who harass you, you can always flag his post on forums and let Mods decide.
And of course don’t forget to check the rules.

I like the current forum system, self-governance via user trust levels.

As for in-game chat ignore function and just walking away should be enough at least to me. Like you said, a filter or something is really difficult especially when everyone can get past it really easily by swearing in another language or just removing a few letters.

The game automatically blocks any swear words and other bits, disallowing you from creating a name that includes them.

I express my anger with name calling sometimes.

I’d like to mention not everyone can take a joke, and not everyone can be careful with what they say. They might use a couple of swear words and kablam, BAN HAMMER! That would suck if it happened in this game, if it did, I’d just leave it and wait for them to change their rules.

I played cabal 2, in the chat I couldn’t say “damnit” and I was playing with a bud… Making me incapable of expressing what I felt when I got killed by a goat. Needless to say I am not continuing that game.

This game has a lot of potential, and I hope none of us get banned for silly stuff. And if someone says something rude to you, just ignore them…

I like the warframe profanity filter  because you can turn it off and on, I have it off ofc ;). And if I cannot say something pervese or stupid in my own clan chat, then that would not be me

The filter needs to have an option to be turned off, it’s extremely annoying.

I agree, I like having context with my sentences.

If we are talking about profanity language, then from my point of view the person who gets offended has an issue.

If we are talking about harassment, then you can’t filter that. I can harass you in-game at any time and the most effective ways usually don’t include using the chat at all. If I wanted to so urgently harass someone verbally, I would just use l33t or some even simpler ways of avoiding the filter.

That’s why there is no reason not to make a filter optional if you already implement one.

Yea, they should make it completely client side, and let players turn it off at their own aggression.

I definitely agree with this. I mean I would even reply “f*** y**! lol” to my friends when they say something to me, since they knows I’m not saying it with any malice intent.
