Here’s a few things every serious game development company enforces on their official forums:
- Enforcement of content restrictions
There are several posts on this board that are either outright sexual in nature or racist. These don’t necessarily bother me, but absolutely serve to potentially alienate people from your game. The content should be removed and the posters given suspensions / eventual bans. You cannot foster a community around a game where this kind of stuff is allowed.
- Enforcement of ban on witch hunting
It simply is an unproductive thing for players to come to the public forum to accuse people of breaking the game terms of service, or for any other behavior. There should be an in-game method for reporting such behavior. Letting this kind of thing happen on the public forums creates nothing but flame wars.
- Consolidating “world is ending posts”
It is not good to ‘censor’ people who want to claim that the game is heading in a negative direction. However, having multiple posts on the front page that all say the same thing serves no real communicative purpose and simply creates a negative impression for those visiting the forum (usually concocted by a small minority of unhappy players).
- Don’t be afraid of responding to your customers
This does not mean that you need to answer every question. Every serious game company is careful in its communication protocols to not commit to any particular changes/updates/etc. without specific authorization from the devs. However, you also can’t just ignore major issues.
