Couldn’t agree more, nice post!
I think MMO nowsday die faster than the past because we have more than hundred of it in the market right now.
RO can live so long because in it’s time there only a few mmo,it’s still the new thing, so people stick with it for a long time.
Although I will agree that modern gamers get distracted much quicker than older gamers, the sad truth is that when RO was released (2004) there weren’t even 10% as many MMOs to choose from as there are now.
Died because developers became from creators of new virtual worlds to just simple businessmans. Gold sellers/real money trade is not the problem, it was always in MMO, but Game Shops that dictating what you should bye… In-game economics is same as developers view of games: there is no soul. Most economics based on donating value, not ingame currency. And ingame society… Yeah, it lost soul too. Long time ago MMO was like new world, people played for days, every day they tried something new. They were not so skillful, they didn’t know much about games at all, but it was great. Now it become too casual and dead.
Sorry for bad English.
Bots, because let’s say you’re a new player then you get a quest to kill 10 monsters but you can’t finish the quest because the area is swarming with bots farming all the monsters. It’s just annoying making you bored and quit eventually.
I second this wholeheartedly.
We do have to remember that games are just games and they stay the same, even when we get handful of updates/dlc’s while we as players grow up and our demans rapidly change because that’s how market demand works. Developers outdo one another just to get our attention and frankly it’s working because we jump from title to title “searching” for a perfect game that will never come.
Would RO be successful if it was released nowadays? Maybe, but not nearly as successful as it was back then when the MMO’s started to take over the gaming market.
I believe that MMOs find their end when no longer providing interesting, engaging content that motivates a userbase to continue playing.
Look at WoW’s subscriber numbers for example.
Whenever a new addon gets released, it’s skyrocketing towards the 10 million+ mark, however 6-12 months after release the number of subscribers drops significantly. Why? See my explanation above.
So? What to do?
Short answer: CONTENT IS KING.
I see where you’re getting at so I’ll try to contribute something.

Lack of advertisement.
I dont think its a good idea to stay in the dark all the time. I remember when the game came out(first day of icbt2) and people have not even heard about this game. All the talks were going about Blade and Soul this BnS that. At least from my perspective of my internet life. The game needs a way to advertise itself. -
Nothing unique to offer.
I am so sick and tired of all these 3rd person mmorpgs that includes nothing but quest this and quest that and in addition you play the same class as probably the other 25% of the players too. This is what I loved about ToS is that the class system is different and you feel different from the other players. -
Failing to stay “fresh”
This is what drives the soul of a League of legends player to stay in touch with the game throughout the years. A game that is repetitive will get really boring fast as you will have nothing to do at the end. Imagine being in the situation where you have absolutely done everything . Then it comes to nothing but make a new character. -
Ignoring the community
What Im trying to lead to is that we are depending on them but at the same time the developers are also depending on us. If we fail to give love and feedback to the game developers, they’ll have a lack of motivation.
I agree with OP on pretty much all these points. I’d add the fact that an MMO needs an addicting end-game. Not just “do this boring thing over and over to collect a reward”. A variety of good dungeons is usually the key.
I’d also add that even if the community is active and competitive without being rude, they need to add reasons for the said community to hang out and push eachother (guilds, raids that NEED multiple players, and events.
Can’t say why they specificly die but, Vindictus (mabinogi heroes) has the most disgusting economy, p2w and gold buying situation, along with a not that great social experience. Yet it’s been alive for a long time.
There is something to be mentioned tho, in my opinion and from all the mmos i’ve played, it has by far the best boss fighting of all mmos.
The game outside of boss fighting is contentless trash tho.
Vindictus is an amazing game put in the hands of a trash company (Nexon). I can’t talk about Cat Devs as I don’t know if they had to do with all the bullshit put in the game.
Well… from what everyone has listed out. I dont really think ToS can perform pretty well now.
It lacked advertisement, and that mostly RO veterans and other mmorpg fans simply followed the game and found it through 100k youtube videos or other mmorpg fan friends.
The game will grow stale after a while. The praises I can find about the game from other players are the class system, music and the art. Nothing else about the fun aspect and simply because it looked good. Players would get bored and simply leave and latch into another mmorpg.
Trading/Economy took a hit with it’s paying system. In fact, it’s pretty much a dead man while having his limbs cut off.
This game has quite a lot of potential. The fact that there are secret classes and secret quests which piqued my interest. To be able to stand out and be different from the cookie cutter characters that players are running is ideal for me.
Modern players forgot how to struggle and used to have things handed for them while they suck on their thumbs. Rather than making ToS some sort of a endurance test instead, make it into a skill test. Make the beginning process a simple task on how to play the game, make them get used to the mechanics and pull the rug under them, hiding a trapdoor filled with snakes and arrows. However, I dont expect them to add such feature. It’s already too late and the game has already been created. I’m just playing this game for I have no other game to play instead. Although, I have hoping for the iOBT to be successful
That depends on the MMO really, some MMO died out due to the company decision to shut it own but still lives on using the private server. Sure you can say a lot of MMO die fast due to recycling some other MMO parts but you really can’t blame them though. I mean look at game nowadays (PS4, XBOX, PC), all of them are just recycled genre just under a different name.
Content is definitely what make things matter. But that’s not all, few MMO don’t even have a great content (just meh) but still people continued to play it because of the tight community. A game is alive when the community is alive. I mean do you really wanna go to a great city but the residents are crappy as hell?
Relationship between the staffs and the community is important as feedback is definitely much needed to get the game up and going. I can understand managing an MMO is quite a gamble as most profits can be made from us players buying in game items. To be honest, if IMC manages to deliver, players wouldn’t mind spending their shekels on a virtual item, as long as they’re worth it that is.
indeed, i do think aswell the fact Vindictus is not bigger is Nexon’s fault
