Yes, a companion takes up a character slot.
And the maximum of the default lodge is 4 characters (3 if you have a pet)
Yes, you can have more than 1 companion, but you can use only one at a time.
If you have a mounted class (SR or Cataā¦) your stats will increase based on companion stats, if you have Hunter or Falconer, you can use the skills of the class, on any other class, is basically a pet. Also you can use a high level companion to help a low level character to level up (confusing? 
)

Do you know if the Falcon also takes up a character slot?
I canāt say for sure, I only had Velheider (Hunter), but itās almost certain that Hawk takes up a slot too, because when you get a companion, the āCompanionā table appears on character select.
So, basically Iāll only be able to get 3 characters max. Marvelousā¦
Unless you upgrade your lodge 
And upgrading costsā¦ Silver? Or TP?
