The Best AoE Wizard path? (Also Cryo/Linker/Elem feedback)

So after playing Wizard and i went the Cryo>Linker>Elementalist path.

And here is what i basically found out.

Link is overall not very useful.
The use is very limited due to the fact that the only thing linker brings to the table, is linking 5 targets so you can hit them all at the same time. If you hit the targets while they are clumped and linked, the damage does not multiply, they will still be only hit once.

Overall, the damage from my type of Wizard fell off pretty early due to the fact that Cryo C1 has limited spells available and they don’t play out with Linker very well either.

I use Ice Bolt x3 and Ice Spike x2 and thats it, i have to run around waiting for cooldowns.

At which point, whenether the mobs are linked or not, makes little difference because while kiting in a circle, you tend to lure the mobs in a manner in which they clump either way, so link is not required.

Adding Elementalist ontop of that, just increased the amount and diversity of spells i have, yes it helps, however Cryo C1 spells fell off hard by the time i got to Elementalist and Linker isn’t that useful overall. So in general you waste 1 circle on linker with little feedback.

If i were to know what i knew now, i would have went Cryo C3 into Elementalist, but then the problem is that Cryo has quite the trouble soloing.

I’m considering that the best path for an AoE Wizard would probably be Wizard>Pyro C1>Pyro C2>Elementalist

While not having a link, sure, Pyro C2 however brings a lot of damage to the table by default and it allows you to be able to still dish out considerable amount of damage while waiting on Elementalist cooldowns.

What do you think?

Wizard C3 > Elementalist also could work however the damage is extremely limited and you’ll just have to hop around waiting for elementalist cooldowns all the time.

You don’t seem to know how Linker works.

Mobs bound together will actually take more damage from AoE attacks if you hit more than one of the monsters linked together. A group of 4 non-linked enemies will take less damage from an AoE than a group of 4 linked enemies.

There’s also Hangman’s Knot AoE Defense decrease attribute which lets spells hit more targets in range than they normally would. There’s monsters that will only let you hit two of them at a time even with an AoE Attack of 4, which Hangman would prevent.

Not to mention how incredibly useful Linker is for Cryo to let Ice Wall “projectiles” deal a ton of damage and make Ice Bolt hit more than 3 enemies. And they’re some of the best party support in the game even at C1, parties will love you.

Of course if you really just want pure damage AoE and nothing else, Pyro C2 -> Elementalist C3 is what you’re looking for I guess.

So what you are saying is, just bear it out and level through the horrible low damage stage and long cooldowns?

Hey, if you want to get damage really early on, go Highlander. Even Pyro C2 has to wait for the long cooldowns, and they have the highest damage of any wizard class you can be at rank 3.

So, in a sense, yes.
Just like every other class bar highlander.

Man, if you think you wasted 1 circle on linker, you have no idea how to use it properly. In my honest opinion, apart from boss fight, linker is one of the most OP class in the entire game.

Care to explain in detail why? GIve me a valid analysis and facts as to why, and i’ll consider changing my opinion.

Any monkey in a suit can say: Its good, l2p"

Because as it is, the only decently useful skill linker has, is the link and it has pretty limited use at this point.

Linker lets any single target skill hit more than one enemy and gives range to normally melee skills when enemies far away from eachother are linked together.

Ice Pike has a crappy horizontal range? No problem, everything’s going to get hit anyway, for more damage to boot!
You going elementalist? Linker has this attribute making Electrocute deal more damage to linked enemies. On top of already helping out AoE damage.
Parties absolutely love linkers because it helps out both AoE and single target classes alike and it makes dungeon runs a LOT faster, period.

Before Linker, I had to run in circles waiting for my cooldowns on Ice Bolt and Ice Pike, especially in very crowded rooms where mobs would just keep spawning in my aggro range. Now? I link everything, stuff dies, and I can sit down next to my bonfire waiting for mobs to respawn. It just goes that much faster.

Alright, so assuming then that Linker IS a good boost to your aoe potential, what other classes would go well hand in hand with it and elementalist?

Pretty much anything really. Higher cryo / pyro / elementalist circles all benefit from Linker in some way. Take prominence for example. It has a fairly random pattern (it does follow you somewhat, but still) but with linked mobs you only need to hit one mob and they’ll ALL take the Prominence damage. The fire pillar on Pyro C2 has really small range, but that’s not an issue with linker. The snowball on Cryo can just roll straight over one enemy to kill everything linked to it, letting you roll over other non-linked monsters within the area, vastly speeding up the kill rate.

I could go on.

Wiz 3 isn’t bad on themselves, even without elementalist’s skill.

Quick cast + sleep + magic missle give you an instant burst of aoe damage (well, sleep isn’t a burst).

That combo takes additional Sp to setup and long time to get it rolling, sleep has quite the cast time and the bolt itself doesnt do that much damage.

However, i havent tried this myself, but i heard that the bolt will jump between sleeping targets, which speeds up the killing process.

@EternalDream

I’ve been trying to see if linking targets and hitting them clumped on each other does indeed increase damage however i’ve had pretty random results, sometimes there would be more damage , sometimes it would deal the same amount of damage.

Sleep doesn’t have much cast time at all. You can release the button insantly, the casting bar is just the time you have to aim it.

And magic missile jumps between targets yes. Energy bolt just deals more damage. (scaling damage even, 150% at level 3 of the attribute, so it’s fairly decent even at higher levels)

Magic Missle and Energy Bolt are different skills.

You basically one shot monster with magic missle + quick cast without sleep. With sleep you can one shot a group of monsters.

Sleep best wizard’s spell confirmed.

lol, glad you found out. Seems like a nice combo, however i havent used sleep much myself, maybe should have looked more into it, but i mean, it doesn’t have much use outside of wizard C3.

@EternalDream ah, makes sense. I always thought for some reason its like Ice Bolt where you have to fully charge it to get the full effect off and you cant run around while doing that either.

Linker would be the exact definition of a dps. Damage per second. They make every skill in game hit like fking hell on mobs and in groups. 10 mob would die in 10 sec if i go solo. Joint makes them go away in 1skill.

Linker is a superb class only for those who understand the role they play.

I didn’t used sleep much during my life as Wiz 3, and have not much problem progressing through it.

Quick cast itself is amazing with good eq and full INT.

At time of writing the attribute bonus is glitched, and only deals 50% extra.
Same with the lethargy bonus, which is 20% instead of stacking to 100%.
Same with Hangman’s Knot: additional damage, which hits for 20% and not 100%.

Ah this makes sense, why Hangmans would hit for around 25-40 instead of 250 as i would have expected.

Those are all values for Level 1 in the attribute. Is the leveling up glitched? ;<
