Substitute the word Token for subscription (like how you would subscribe to any MMO) and you get the idea.

Why the word token at all then? because you can trade it around and buy it in game from people and it’s a subscription in the form of an item. Which means they bundle it in with DLC packages you can buy and you have the choice to use it yourself or sell it on ingame.
Think of it like this, If they just sold you 30 days of subscription in a DLC you wouldnt want to buy another DLC, but with the token they can sell you both and you can keep on and sell one or use both and mix and match

Token - Subscription Item.
Premium User - Under the Effect of a Token Subscription.
Premium Item - Cash Shop Item

Hair color isn’t tradeable. It applies permanently to the character like the achievement hair dyes (black, pink, blue). The premium hair styles are tradeable via team storage, as are the eye colors.

While you don’t need a token to buy them, you will need a token if you want to access team storage to trade items to another character on your account.

So, I can’t dye the Premium hair the color I want and move it to a different character with it keeping the color?

Hair colors are applied to your character.

F1 > Character Settings

That’s correct, unfortunately.

If you’re still confused I can hop on either during my lunch break or after work and either take some screen captures or video in game to show how they all work.

Yeah, it was mentioned in an announcement when they first implemented the dyes, but isn’t explained very well in game.

I was on hiatus when they came out, so I was very confused when I bought the hair dye since I didn’t know it had to be selected from character settings XD I thought it bugged at first, since I was expecting something that you equipped.
