I play a tank from the beginning of the game but don’t play shield oriented tank.
Some general comments:
the monster in R8 are hitting extremely hard compared to R7.
With 1300 Pdef and 750 Mdef, I still take a lot of damage from the 28X mobs (i’m around 280 too)
Guardian rebalancing made it a handy skill to have.
You don’t loose that much damage because only your base PA is reduced and the base skill damages aren’t.
As a tank you shouldn’t have an high PA to start.
You are missing with this build a lot of nice tools, armor break from Pelt 3 (that has been up a lot), Strike debuff from Rodel 3.
Fencer need to be really dex oriented to be effective (need a comfy crit base to use properly epee garde) but as a tank you also need a really high HP pool and MDEF (Magic skills can’t be evaded sadly and have really high base value).
Depending on which path you want to keep, shield focused or Fencer several options are possible:
The without worries allrounder:
SW1 / Pelt 3 / Rodel 3 / Murmillo 1
High defenses and high damage burst potential. High aggro and some defensive cooldowns. A LOT OF INTERACTIONS: armor break + 2 strike debuff for high burst aggro.
Sadly you need a crap load of silvers to make it work (by buying the murmillo attributes).
Throw Con in mass, be carried during Rank 1 to 6 and become strong in R7 and a beast in R8.
The variant that is Spear based: SW1 / Pelt 1 / Hoplite 1/ Rodel 1-2-3 / Hoplite 2 / Murmillo
Pelt 1 giving you the best of the class, the attributes and guardian + Swashbucling.
Finestra is good balance between offence and defense full duration with 10/10 (bonus crit, block in % AOE ratio bonus), synchro thrusting is decent with the murmillo attribute and stabbing is quite good as 14 hits skill.
Rodel 3 gives you all the debuff you need to enhance high murmillo base attack with slithering and high kick debuff.
The super offensive tank: SW 1/ Pelt 2 / Rodel 3/ Shinobi 1 / Murmillo 1
One of the best bossing build, really high burst build with the murmillo attribute and the clones. Kill bosses really fast even with CON BUILD.
You can also melt super fast if you use your clones in a bad timing.
“Jack of all trades” build, PVE and “pVp”:
I putted only the must have points:
SW
3 in bash for knockdown attribute
5 in pain barrier because it is one of the best swordsman skill
Pelt
Guardian 5 is a really good stance, 5% PA for 17% Physical Def.
Swashbuckling 5
At least 1 on Umbo for knockdown/stun.
Hoplite
15 Finestra for best value
15 Stabbing
1 Spear lunge
1 Long stride
5 Spear throw, nice spammer with 3 hits and the formidable bind debuff for pvp.
8 more in spear lunge is also an option because you will always use this skill as a debuff (upgrade the pitiful damage and it is unclear if the buff is harder to be resisted with more points) during all your carrier.
8 in synchro is possible but will fade hard without Murmillo attribute.
8 in Long stride make it a nice damaging KB aoe.
Up to you, i picked 9 in lunge for simplicity.
Corsair WTF???:
Iron hook 5/5 one of the best pvp cc in game.
Jolly roger 5/5 for farming mats and bonus combo when you are the leader
Could be unlock chess HUEHUE (maybe it will be useful one day???)
Dragoon:
Max serpentine as a nice damaging move and two huge debuffs (+100% damage and bleeding)
Dethrone for stupid over 100K damage per use
Gaebulg 1 if you can use a retrain skill potion to keep the attributes with 1 lvl in it.
Dragon soar is overall better than dragon tooth, easier to use in pvp (no casting), a slash damage move and a shock attribute even is the damages are smaller.
Pro:
Stupid damage even as a tank with the spear lunge + serpentine + Dethrone combo.
Nice crit base without heavy investment.
Nice defensive ability with +30% block value that is scaling nicely with heavy CON.
Heavy utilities with a bunch of debuffs (reduce boss attack speed, adding physical damage with serpentine)
Can farm mats properly.
CON:
Always out of SP…
Dethrone makes you feel that your other skills are useless if they aren’t for utilities…
One trick pony combo pvp, iron hook, long stride to close the gap, serpentine + spear lunge double dethrone. When it works it is amazing, but it doesn’t work on DEX focused characters, can be blocked by Heavy con characters
