Need some help with Swordsman class

Returning player here, I made a character when the game first came out and only got to like level 13 or so and decided to stop playing because I was just overwhelmed with all the class choices and I had a feeling I would screw up my skills and class somehow. That, and the fact that the game had just come out so many things were still being balanced and many people complained Swordsman was extremely weak.

Almost a year later, I want to give the game a try again now that I assume most things have been ironed out so I had a few questions for anyone out there that has played alot or knows about all the changes.

  1. Is Peltasta still recommended/required for end game content and parties like when the game first came out due to swash buckling? Can I skip it?

  2. What stats should I be focusing on? My primary focus is damage dealing, no matter if the other classes can still out damage me. Back then some people said to go all STR and others argued DEX, but I put most of my points into STR so far.

  3. What class(s) would you guys recommend? My goal is high damage and 2 handed swords so I’m leaning towards Doppelsoeldner as my final class.

  4. How is the Shinobi class in the current game? It looks pretty interesting and I’m a little interested in trying it out for fun but I read that it relies on DEX a lot and so far all of my points have gone to STR, and I don’t know the pros’s and con’s to it.

Thanks in advance.

It’s not quite as mandatory, but it is recommended depending on the build you’re pursuing.

DEX will out damage STR at either R7 or R8 depending on your build. Early game STR will do more damage, but as the game progresses the damage from CRIT is simply better as it’s based off percentage. DEX also offers some much needed survivability through Evasion.

Doppel is your best option. It’s AOE focused but still does tremendous single target damage. Here’s a great guide by @Lostac:

As unique as Shinobi is, it’ll be out DPS’d by the meta classes, and it doesn’t synergise well with 2 Handed Swords.

I was wondering if swordies should go Plate, Leather or Cloth armor with HIGH/FULL DEX? Leather seem to have many good stuff like Vubbe Fighter Gauntlets and Windrunner boots. (I am SW3>Cata3>Goon2, I’d like to do both PvE and PvP)

As for gems, yellow or red gems on 2h spear? Even with high dex I am sure there are times against high crit resist monsters where you just seldom crit…

For armor, should we gem for Pdef/Mdef over everything else for more “effective HP”?

Maybe this will help the OP as well since gearing is just as important as builds.

Thanks alot for all the info!

Guess I’m gonna have to respec since I put a lot of points into STR so far :frowning: but oh well it’ll be worth it in the long run apparently.

Also I’m glad to see that Peltasta isn’t such a huge requirement anymore, I hated the idea of being forced to take a certain class just to get into parties.

So far based on that guide I have 3 choices:

Swordsman 3 - Highlander - Barbarian- Doppel 1-2-3
Swordsman - Highlander - Barbarian 3- Doppel 1-2-3
Swordsman - Highlander 3 - Barbarian 1- Doppel 1-2-3

I’m actually really surprised Swordsman 3 is even a suggestion, they must of got major buffs, I remember back then people highly advised not to take any other Swordsman circles past 1.

Now I’m just trying to decide which of those 3 class tree choices I should go with… hmm…

Leather is viable, but I prefer Plate, another alternative is 3 Plate pieces and 1 Leather Piece. Even with Plate or Cloth you’ll be dodging plenty of attacks so either way DEX provides significant survivability. Leather is very useful in PVP to stack Evasion and remains a popular choice.

The rule to go by is, 50%+ CRIT Rate is Yellow, 50%- is Red. Even with high CRIT resist you can stack it enough to CRIT most hits.

DEF over HP, especially when it comes to gems. As a Swordsman it is strongly recommended you take 50+ CON, that combined with Swordsmen’s natural HP advantage can have you sitting at a reasonably high HP.

If you’re a low enough level rerolling is probably worth it, that’s how much better DEX is than STR.

Peltasta is still very useful and I don’t want to downplay its usefullness. The obvious grinding advantage still exists, but with the Guardian buff it can also be a great tool to stay in the fight. That being said, as a Doppel you’re there to do damage, so don’t feel that you’re at a disadvantage for not taking it.

Swordsman did receive some noticeable buffs. Concentrate scales to a degree, and Restrain remains effective as ever. Pain Barrier is highly effective at avoiding CC, and at Swordsman 3 you can have nearly 100% PB up-time.

Good luck deciding, but no matter what you pick, you’re in for a fun, relevant build.

I second going for SW3. I really love SW3 and that is the reason why I switched from my Paladin3-Monk1-Inquisitor into Swordsmen.

I got real tired of getting knocked back/staggered as a melee cleric, completing interrupting the flow of combat and my rotation. Pain Barrier solved the problem.

As a cata3, speed is also a bonus.
