To be fair LOL uses a farm of servers, which helps to instantiate each game individually, so it is not a fair comparison. I am not sure what they use for sure but it seems like something that can be easily scaled to accomidate for more people during weekends and whanot, same as Dota2. I would take a guess and say they are probably using something like Docker or whatever
When early access was a thing and we had 50k players, 2 NA servers made sense. Even on Orsha there was a que to get in… I miss those days.
But it makes absolutely no sense right now to keep 2 servers separated, lets face it IMC will not be able to bring the population back to 50k players. not even 15k players probably. But if we get a single server and population stays the same, it kind of becomes bearable… maybe…
