They were testing putting it behind a pay wall and their player retention after doing so.
When companies do this unless they take a sharp decline right after they will very very seldom revert the decision. The only way they will is if it affects their sales, and since they have to reach less people but can pull more money out of them with this method, they went for it. Funny how they do the same with the TP limit because of ‘stolen credit cards’ recently, eh.
They did the same thing with launch you know. They introduced the idea of founders packs but still hadn’t fixed a lot of HUGE game breaking bugs, they had spent at least a good 2 months with their only changes we could see being monetization at a time when the game definitely had huge flaws. This backfired and the founder system was heavily disliked so it went to a poll and was eventually changed from the original plan.
This is what would be necessary to revert this change, and it’s most likely too late.
