Finally killed by a dragoon that can damage. at first I was loosing hope. I really wanted a cata dragoon. but seeing the little damages I took from them in team battle I am always discouraged. but finally. I was killed by a nice damage. faith restored!!.

I skipped restrain over a more āstandardā build thinking Iād find myself looking for parties more frequently⦠not sure If I regret it yet, but that makes me sub-par for pvp.
Like what almost everyone would say, itās almost useless if thereās a PD in the enemy party or when youāre against high-evasion opponents (if you miss, restrain doesnāt proc). Maybe it does make you sub-par, but not by a huge margin.
Are you Sw1 Pel1 Hop1? Not that bad really. PVP-wise, you have KD bash from Sw1, Guardian from pelt is useful all-around (also, shield mastery), and Finestra from Hop1 (you get to use 1H spear early too, great for pairing with shield).
Higher pain barrier uptime I think is the biggest plus for going Sword3.
Yeah I agree, pain barrier is kind of a big deal. Thatās right, SwPelHopCata2 so far. I have to recognize umbo blow KD is ridiculously funny in PvP, and can get an opponent in an interesting position if you aim right (throw an opponent from their starting point to right in the middle of your team)
I tried a pretty much standard build, since I donāt have a lot of time, so Iām ok with making compromises. So far 3wins out of 8 matches. Most matches Iāve actually felt useful and avoided early death, but only managed to kill 3 times. You CAN kill people with stabbing
and I hate full con goons, at least for as long as the STR block pen isnāt implemented.
Iāll stay out of it til I hit rank6 our of respect for others, I still need rush and full trot to be really effective.
I think catas have a higher win rate than most of the archer classes. Cataās can greatly impact a team if played well.
I almost forgot about Umbo Blow. Really handy. The thing I hate with single-target melee range skills is that you really need to land it well or itās a sure miss. Makes you hate latency spikes even more. XD
Yeah, there seems to be some animosity against R5-below joining TBL, especially when you get partied with them. Itās really not a big deal for me at least since Iāve partied with some where we actually won. On the contrary, there are some R7s who die instantly for some reason.
to start : let me answer the question: yes i was in the leader board at the until yesterday in the 117 mark, ^^, i will explain below my experience with it, and most of it since i can only play 1 hour of pvp a day, iām not in it anymore.
letās move to the wall of text now :
well, i disagree on that(the archer part), iām playing cata , with petal hop build i must say that iām doing very well myself since there is not one match that i could not ācarryā someone with impaler and throw it on my teamside AOEs for the kill. , even getting kills since iām being very aggressive, and in some matches i can even do a complete knockback cycle in some enemies, even killing them if they are already on low hp or finishing it with impaler but after playing a few matches i can say that the only reason cata is doing fine, is
1: the mobility of course we go cata because of that.
2: the HP, we have a natural high hp because of SW so, even if most players are using a pve build with their cata, the HP already would be HIgh
and this is the problem with archers, many of them are simple doing pve builds with 0 con, so they are really easy to kill, once you fight a good archer with CON they can kill you easily if your rush is on CD or any teammate if they just keeping their distance and going for the damage without pressing too much for the entire enemy team to focus on him, this happen a lot since most times the entire team focus on the healer, the archer have a free reign to kill without anyone notices him, well i do and i always go for the archer first because it would be a 0 con and easy kill or a truly powerful fight who can change the game for them.
Now after playing almost one week of pvp ( i can only play one hour because of the time limit, sometimes two hours if i got home earlier).
I can say that cata can do fine their job, that is to destroyer the formation of the enemy, be it with impaler and bringing one of them, since most of the time some āPlaymateā would try to save the one you got and you can get two kills from one impaler once you teammates knows about the cata of the team a be aware of possibility impalerās target, since most of the time some players do not even see it.
Now, the second aspect of the pvp: killing: cata completes lack the damage to kill anyone that is not using a 0Con build if Rush is on CD or if they have a full con build even with rush is impossible , this even includes once you have add the dragoon kit of damage, of course talking about a 5x5 scenario, since it simple takes too many tries for the opponent to die and some teammates can come to help him or he have the ability to escape the knockback cycle since a few at least for me when i try to mix some damage skills from dragoon in it, sometimes they can run away before i can knockback them again, and the cycle would repeat itself, so the best bet i can give is, try to low their HP with the knockback cycle alone, so they can feel āsecureā since they HP would not go down so fast and once you have the HP you āknowā that rush can finish them off, you use it and kill them, some of them do not even use HP pot until is too late (rush is on them), since they do not believe that i can kill them because the knockback cycle does not have much damage.
on the third aspect: surviving, i can say that cata because of itās mobility can survive really well, unless you are doing a rush zerg with your team or trying to save some squish teammate with a good position earthwave for the knockback the entire enemy team the change of being ākilledā is really low in a 2x2 scenario in a 5x5 scenario i would say that is normal since they can ambush you once you are running and deplete your hp until you die, since you can always out run them, but again being running all the time would not make you win the match.
edit: there was even a match that i went for the earthwave since the enemy team was with a rune caster doing making a icewall PP combo in my team that was trapped in ice three, and got āoutā with only 155 hp 0 pots, i keep running the arena for more than two minutes, asking for heal from the Monk, since he was āonlyā healing himself when his hp went down, and even them had a doppel in pursuit (yes he keep coming the entire time, i could even swear that i could see red in his eyes) and to keep him out , it was just knockback after knockback, but by the end of it i was the one alive together with a wl, even killed the doppel in the process, after i got my heal of course, it was my best match so far, i was laughing when it was over and i was alive, pvp really does make you blood boil, i would never have this emotion if it was in pve, the next round they tried to do the same, but i died in the āProcessā of stopping them, but it was all good, the 2-3 minutes until the round was over was a good time to calm myself down.
on a finish note: now i can understand because someone months ago once we got the korea ranking list, the ādoppelā on the list had a cata3 build, cata really offer a lot for a SW kit in pvp but lacks the main aspect that can make you win, that is a good finisher, rush is fine most of the time but it can not compare with cyclone from doppel for example.
on a off note: how about the population of you serve in this pvp-time, once i play pvp i always use the addon !who to see how many is online, and the lowest number was 2047 , i got as high as 25xx playing one day, iām from silute .
on a final note: about the rank 5 players, yes they have really low skill set to work it, but i can affirm that i can see some of them evolving, most of them once they die or tries to do something and fail on the match, they can see the fail of their build and change it, one example would be a archer wugushi i saw, one time he was 0 con build on my team, two days later i got to fight with him again, and he had 40% more HP, since i believe that he had put CON in it, once he saw the failure of his pvping last time, (and yes i had take notice of him because he had only 4xxxk hp, close to 5k the first time we fought together). and this would never happen with a archer rank 7, for god sake i fought with one yesterday, that āsaidā it was lvl 262, and had only 6,8k HP.

can out dps level 280 catagoons in boss rushes at level 220 on archer
scout barrel ( and many other skills) can completely negate their existence in pvp
and the best part is they know it, everyone knows it except you,apparently

and swordies arent even in earth tower high floor clear runs
basically swordies fight for the scraps of all the other classes in every game mode possible and are nothing more than grinding slaves for the bonus exp from having the other class type in it, without that buff you might have an even harder time getting in parties
its sad but imc made it that way
New update this week, like i said before i can only play one hour a day in pvp , so it is hard to be higher in the rank.
but today i proud to say that i almost at top 20.
letās hope i can keep going up.
edit: when i was writing this post, i have gone up 2 ranks, and now iām at 19, ahhh, top 20 :).
and on a side note this one is not my dragoon, is my cata with petal hop-cata 3 build that i have re rol, iām doing pvp with him from this last week to today, because i wanted to have a way to compare both builds.
and i must say that umbo blow knockback is really nice and fun to use, is a lot harder than bash, but once you got them in, they fly really far and is very nice to see it, mainly when they are trying to go back to their side for a heal or something like that or when they are at that tight group together and you use it, is a very nice feeling.
later on i will check again, since it seems that there will be more match going on, so my rank may go down, so i will edit later on with my final place on the rank for today.

As a person who was up to 2 and down to 6 would share though. Swordsman who ends up in top 10 is very formidable player. It is possible be in the top with physical class despite current patch favor magic users.
The match are ranked base so it bias toward another skillful player, minimize skill advantage. The fight in high league is depend a lot on MM. You see āALL STARā match over and over. You even remember their build eventually, lol.
Being 1st is not very meaningful if mmr is close. You gain smaller point on win compare to lose which equally gain/loss at start. I rarely gain any mmr point once reach top 10. Every 2 win 1 loss net a small mmr.
Since there is small skill advantage. High mmr player is one who rolled in better team or able to carry bad team.
Well, I do know that swordsman in top 20 usually knows how to utilize the swordsman well.
Personally i had been up and down in top 30 to top 10 depending on luck (you canāt really carry game with chrono 3). There is a massive difference in skill level of swordsman I met in high ranking compared to low ranking.
