Cecil's Swordsman Build Workshop!

Cecil, in pvp wouldn’t a max con build have trouble against a full dex build due to the fact that you won’t have the accuracy to hit them? Unless skills can’t miss of course in that case your full con build should win over assuming the skills retain high base damage

But, will CON builds be able to hit DEX builds?

@Cecil
hi just want to ask . im currently c2 sword > barb . can i go back to highlander then go barb again and go doppel later on? if can . can you help me with my skill stat thank you :smiley:

A mix of DEX and CON may possibly be the best overall PvP solution for most melee builds as of right now. That way you get decent crits and crit resistance. You can also pump either up more with gems if needed. The big question is whether skills can be easily dodged with high DEX. We should test it out @Cecil. What server are you on?

@Cecil. Do you have any recommendation for PVE corsair build? Skills and stats. I’m thinking 1str:2dex with a little bit of spr and con along the way.

But skillwise I am at a loss. I tried rerolling a few toons, but nothing fancy me so far. Thanks.

Hello people again.

@william_neugebauer
That build won’t do much damage in PvE, at least. I’m really unsure of the viability of full tanks in this game, I’m leaning towards them not being all that useful. (for a myriad of reasons) Cataphracts are tanky because of the extra health + defensive stats they get from being mounted. You’re better off going with a full offensive build, I’d say.

@Soushi
I prefer Spear Lunge because it’s debuff allows the whole party to deal more damage to a boss. If you’re in a party, suddenly all the archers + other spear swordsmen will deal increased damage. Also, it works on mobs that are already pierce-weak, which means using Spear Lunge makes them take even more damage from pierce attacks. (It’s also handier for grinding!). However leaving it at 1 isn’t a horrible idea, I would just prefer to have a move I use that often be stronger rather than weaker.

@psirukasu
I couldn’t give you a good one, Catas are tricky to build. But I’m sure something like Swordsman > Peltasta > Hoplite > Cata > Cata2 > Cata3 would be what you’re after.

@mrwolololo
Pick CON for PvP (which isn’t out so don’t pick it) and STR, I wouldnt add anything earlier than Lv10 Finestra.

@romandogarcia and @4w4h4n
Possibly, this is kind of unknown at this point. But you do gain 1 accuracy per level, which would offset some of the evasion. Magic can’t miss but skills certainly can. Even if full CON builds miss, It might be better to do something like gem for accuracy or something.

@GingerSnaps
You certainly can, but I think it would be better to just keep going as a Barbarian, and then Doppel. You’ll still be weaker than if you had’ve picked Highlander in C2, but better off than going Highlander in C4.

@SuicideSamurai
Yeah, I would only add DEX if I was missing a whole lot in PvP. I play on Gabija, I have a 111 Hoplite and a 131 Cataphract, if you have a char around those levels we could certainly do a spot of testing.

@spymonkey
Corsair is something I haven’t got much knowledge with. I see no reason to not go full DEX, however. I wouldn’t bother with CON or SPR, they won’t give you much benefit! I hope you can find a class you like playing, I’ve already quit a 111 Hoplite and am honestly thinking about rolling a Sadhu on release.

I think on release I’ll end up rolling something like a full DEX PvE Swordsman > Peltasta > Barbarian > Cataphract > Cataphract C2 > Doppelsoldner. Catas seems really fun, 2H Spears seem to be the best weapons in the game and I am really curious how skills interact with riding. I’ll make a build for this soon!

@Cecil, dont get it. Isnt Peltasta based on shield?

Hello @Cecil!

Can you help-me out?

That’s the build that I came out with, thinking that all that I need is to buff myself for the main damage skill’s that comes on high levels (barbarian/doppelssoeldner). My strategy is to buff my atacks to do the over damage with mordschlag/cyclone/cleave.

The swordsman buff works on skill damage? I choose de swordsman C3 not just becouse of restrain, but to have full gung ho/concentrate as well.

@cecil hi again . can you recommend some skill build for me? im currently sword c2 . going barb c2. and doppel later on . thanks! :smiley:

it does…i am currently at rank 4 as highlander with full swordsman on previous ranks…i got concentration and gung ho maxed and the buff works on the skills…

haha we got quite similar build just that i went to highlander than barb…
this is what i am following now

That seems like a pretty solid build and like u said Catas are tricky to build. So I was looking after some builds on that arrengment that you suggested and found this one, what you think?

@rattobr
You basically have to pick your poison in C2 if you want to make a Cataphract. Going Peltasta gives a nice defensive active and the option to go 1h + Shield for extreme tank mode. Barb Cataphracts are really awkward, see the only Barb C1 skill you can use while mounted is Helm Chopper, but Helm Chopper is simply such an incredibly amazing skill (hits twice, has overheat) that it gives me doubts. And I personally hate buffs that arent up 100% of the time (Hello Lv5 Finestra).

All in all, that is a super weird build and I wouldnt suggest anyone going it at this stage.

@Mitsukai
Hello yourself!

Ok so if you want an Autoattacking build, go for Corsair. If you take the Barb/Doppel path, you’ll get much, much higher damage from skills. Also, Swordsman buffs do work on skills, but getting C3 is a bad idea unless you are hell bent on PvP. This is because getting higher ranks in Barb will make those skills deal extra damage. And Highlander’s Cartar Stroke is insanely, insanely good.

I would recommend the cookie cutter Swordsman > Highlander > Barb3 > Doppel. If you are more interested in an AA build, check out some of the Corsair builds.

@GingerSnaps
I would just follow this build as best you can from C3 onwards. (Ignore the Highlander part, pretend its C2 Swordsman XD)

@yami_shoumetsu
I know you didn’t directly ask for me for assistance, but I feel like I need to pipe up and say that isn’t a very optimal build, mostly because the damage you get from swordsman buffs is tiny compared to the massive damage from Barbarian skills. (That’s ok though, this is why there is a beta!) Like my good friend Mr. Snaps, I’ll go ahead and point you to this build which basically a better version of what you have: http://www.tosbase.com/tools/skill-simulator/build/sak3d3ekvi/

@psirukasu
Oh stop it you :blush:
But the main reason Catas (Only DPS Catas, mind you) are tricky to build is C2. One one (average) Highlander skill is usable while mounted and the 2H Sword passive isnt useful. Peltasta is a great choice for Tanky Catas, but offers nothing for DPS. So you’re basically left with Swordsman C2 which is really bad unless you like PvP (somewhat ironically Cata’s are supposed to be pretty darn good in PvP, but even then C2 Peltasta is likely better in PvP)

Anyway if you want to do damage don’t invest in anything but DEX (Possibly some STR later on). I went ahead and made what I think is a much better build for a DPS Cata:

In the near future I am probably going to make a bit of a Cataphract guide or least PSA, since they have a lot of hidden strengths and weaknesses. For example, Earth wave seems to gain more hits as you level it up, meaning it’s actually a lot more powerful than the numbers would describe. The best Catas are probably tanky ones, Cata is a very, very, VERY good choice for tanks.

I get it. Now i am curious about the Tanky Catas, since I have doing a barb dps oriented. How much stats and skills of Tanky Cataphracts and DPS Cataphracts differ. Since you already made a DPS illustration , could you link me a Tanky Cata build?

Hey Cecil! I was wondering if you can look at my build, I know you probably have like 234234 people asking you right now but I needed some input as I started off as a different main. So I read somewhere that Finestra’s 150+ crit = 150 “DEX” and I know people have stated that dex capped out at like 220 or something in this game so I would only need 70 dex right? and then rest into STR? Also I haven’t been able to test Spear Lunge or Throwing Spear, but based off the ToSbase the throwing spear damage scales really high and I saw you say you’d rather have spear lunge be higher in damage. So what would you take out of this build and put into spear lunge?

@psirukasu
Funny thing is, I actually just went and made one, complete with rationale, the whole shebang.

I’m quite happy with it actually!

@Galaxy
Hey yourself. Don’t worry, I happen to have a lot of free time at the moment. 15 Finestra = 150 DEX because it gives the same crit rate that 150 DEX would. I’ve never heard of a cap on DEX though!

But each point into DEX is less valuable than the point before it, so what those people might’ve been saying is at around 220 DEX it becomes better to start adding STR. Because Hoplites get so much extra crit rate, they can afford to add some STR since they’ll likely crit nearly all the time anyway.

While Throwing Spear has nice damage, it has a very long cooldown, and actually lowers your damage until you walk over to where the Spear is and pick it back up. That’s time you could be attacking!

In the build you linked, I would take points out of Pierce. But keep in mind that it’s really down to preference, either way is good. But a side note: Max Stabbing! It’s your best DPS skill. It doesn’t look like it scales well, but considering it hits something like 15 times, the increase of 24 damage per point is actually multiplied to (15 x 24=) 360 damage per point.

Awesome. Thanks for the reply @Cecil :grinning: I actually really needed to know those things and it was hard finding the information on the forums.

@Cecil
regarding that build that you said to me…what stat build is recommended on that…
currently thinking of dex build

@Cecil, I wanna ask, does the skill Warcry really help in the long run? I followed the earlier build and put 5 to Cleave and 1 to Helm Chopper. After looking at the revised version, I had a thought. What if I use the points for Warcry and put in Helm Chopper/Cleave instead? What are the implications that could arise from that build?

I prefer to max out helm chopper instead of cleave, helm chopper hit twice and very hard cleave only once. I put just 1 point to cleave only for the +50 crit rate.
