A Plea for No Publisher

Steam is not a publisher, Valve is, and Valve only publishes in-house content (Portal, DOTA2, TF2, CS, etc), AFAIK they do not publish any 3rd party games.

I also agree that IMC should go with a publisher, but honestly I can’t think of a really good publisher at this point. Valve will most definitely not publish ToS as they have never published a 3rd party game.

TF2 dont have a cash shop ??? (i mean not cash shop like riot or dota2)

i agree with this
even tho im on asia… i know that feeling of your fave game will be ruined by greedy publisher.

Are people still trying to call Steam a publisher?

Do they not get that Steam is a distribution platform, and Valve only publishes their own games?

Whatever you do, do NOT negotiate with TenCent.

Although Valve has made some disgusting monetization efforts with Dota 2 (Hey good goy, pay 28 euro for this remodel with fancy effects and a bit of programming), it is still the single cash shop I’ve spend more money on than all other cash shops combined. I hope imcgames will pull off something similar.

P2W (or Pay2Advantage for those special people who have to take things literal) is just such a huge turnoff. Seeing other more successful in life players get their success in game too just because they can pay for it is a bit unfair to all the unsuccessful NEETs out there. So it’s a win+win/lose+lose situation with a cash shop. Wouldn’t you rather want NEET money anyway? They have brand loyalty.

I think it’s not impossible to keep the store cosmetics only while providing some other features that don’t directly affect gameplay. Such as character slots, and perhaps at the upper limits one time auction house slots and bank space upgrades.

There’s plenty of potential for cosmetics on things. Cosmetic spells, companions, hats, clothes, hair style, dyes, eyes, weapons etc. Will these things require development time? Definitely. Will you build a (high quality) game around it, not affected and gimped by F2P money mooching techniques, pleasing people? Definitely.

And hey, if you’re going to release on Steam anyway, it has a market and accounts have an inventory, allowing people to trade their cosmetic drops from ingame over the market nets a small income too.

+1 to this. Steam isn’t a publisher, they’re just a distribution platform; steam is a way to get your game out there to an audience and nothing more. That is what makes it perfect for ToS. Publishers are companies who exist solely to make a profit for themselves. If a game doesn’t turn a profit in spite of (or because of) what they do, they’ll just drop it, it’s happened dozens of times before. Every MMO player here knows just how awful publishers are, Nexon, Aria games, Gameforge, Perfect World, they all have their huge barrels of issues that absolutely no one wants to deal with; but people deal with it anyway because the games that these developers make are worth the hardship. Imagine what these games would be like without the publishers having a say in what goes on with the game. Making a deal with a publisher should be IMCgames absolute last resort to staying afloat, not their first option. This isn’t even taking into consideration how bad asian publishers can be, either. Publishers in China and SEA can be even a hundred times worse than anything US/Euro players have had to ever deal with. Making a deal with a publisher and giving them huge control over your game is signing a deal with the devil to get your product out there to people. Publishers are in it ONLY for themselves and no one else, they are a company out to make a profit and nothing more.

Tf2 and Dota 2 both have cash shops which provides cosmetics same goes for league of legends. What they don’t have is a pay to win option which LoL has. (Your silly gems/token system) Way to make the game balance for free to play players.
Don’t touch me you filthy casual.

Riot is a good publisher? you’re kidding me right?!
They completely ignore all player feedback and invest only in the marketing/skin area. I don’t even need to mention that horrendous client. Dota2 had a 100x better client since the beta and is now getting a major revamp with so many features, meanwhile riot hasnt made a decent spectate/replay system yet (I remember 5 years ago when I still played this in the beta they said it was in dev, look at it now).
I was just browsing and I know riot does not have anything to do with the TOS but I just couldn’t see this and not reply.

Stay away from AriaGames, LevelUp, and PlayPark.

Riot is not a good publisher. Take a look at Dota 2 or TF2 from Valve and Path of Exile from Grind Gear Games!
I realy hope ToS wont be p2w

Ah Riot…

I remember when Lead Balance Designer Morello lied to my face, on mic, in front of 100+ people at Pax Prime about how Riot felt about Mordekaiser’s state in the game. Despite the fact that he was weak in competitive play and was only good at pubstomping people who could not figure out his mechanics. Same people who would have been pubstomped by people using any other class they did not know the mechanics of.

Then they went and (next day) turned Mordekaiser into a joke of a character that could not even pubstomp anymore and a person losing to a morde in lane became target for team wide mocking and insults. I did that to a guy playing Brand, in mid lane, once.

I played counter intuitive. He moved forward, I did not move, he fired his skillshots where he thought I would go. Cause everyone pulls away from a Brand about to do his skill chain combo right?

Result: Under farmed Brand who proceeded to become the no holds barred target of all the toxicity his team could throw at him. Despite his team’s jungler focusing solely on trying to stop my power farming.

It was terrible, basically Morde could only work if you majorly outplayed your enemies anyways. Made me regret buying almost every single skin Morde had.

I’ll just say this, if the game is published by Nexon NA, I will not play it, and will deter everyone I know from playing the game, DO NOT publish it with Nexon NA.

Same. Path of Exile by GGG is a self developed and self published, and self distributed game that has a VERY good micro-transaction cash shop focused mainly on cosmetic effects.

If a game like Path of Exile can self sustain it self, then I’m sure a true Ragnarok Online predecessor with a HUGE following already would have no problem sustaining it self, with a purely cosmetic micro-transactions, skill reset / stat reset scrolls, maybe even storage expansion, none of these are PvE or PvP game breaking, or pay-2-bypass progression.

IMCGames is still doing everything for the game, the game is not being “published” really. Steam is just hosting the game for them but Steam really has no say in the way the game is being published. Just like every other game on Steam.

Stop bringing stuff up without probable cause. The game is already on steam during test phase. IMCGames has proved that they can develop for Korea, China and the West just their CBTs. Give them some credit where its due.

What does any of this you say, have anything to do with what the petition is about?
If the game will be only in steam for the West and not Nexon NA or any other crappy publisher, then its all good.

You win my heart. lol… TF2 hats for the win!
