I have 8 red and 8 blue, and now when i walk back to the bone pile it is on fire, and i can insert the bone in both piles again. is been 3 hours i still get “the device is not operational” . seriously?
If I remember correctly, you need to feed the piles multiple times, not just once. 
It’s one of those very old gimmicks intended for when the game was very populated, with multiple parties grinding there for experience (I never saw many party grinding there tho, even back then it wasn’t a very popular spot) making the opening way faster, now if you attempt it solo it takes quite a while.
